Pigeonpea is known as:
Tur, Arhar in Hindi ; Kandi in Telugu
Pigeonpea has many unique characteristics:
Finds an important place in the farming systems adopted by smallholder farmers;
Grown on mountain slopes to reduce soil erosion;
Seed protein content (21%) compares well with other grain legumes;
Used in more diverse ways than other grain legume crops;
Main use as dhal (dry, dehulled, split seed used for cooking) .
Green seeds are used as a vegetable.
Crushed dry seeds as animal feed.
Green leaves as fodder.
Stalks as fuel wood and to make huts, baskets, etc.
Plants are also used to culture the lac-producing insect.
